INT. NASH HOUSE – LIVING ROOM
Elderly MRS. NASH sits in a firm wooden chair. ANTHONY, DORRINE, WESLEY, GRACE, stand facing DOCTOR BERTRAM NASH. Young RONNIE sits on the floor, playing “war” with toy soldiers.
MRS. NASH (knits, mumbles to herself)
This has happened before.
WESLEY (to Dr. Nash)
What do you mean we can’t go outside?
Pretty soon, there isn’t going to be an outside.
There you go again with those riddles, Doc.
I would have thought my meaning was perfectly clear.
DOCTOR NASH glances at his wrist watch, then crosses to the double windows above the sofa. He pulls the curtains closed.
Let the light in, Bert. It’s such a beautiful day.
Some things, no one should have to see.
RONNIE crashes a toy jeep over several army men, makes the noise of an explosion. His mother, DORRINE, touches his shoulder as a signal to quiet him.
No jokes, Doc. Tell us why you summoned us here. How could you know? How could you possibly know?
In the gap of a long silence, MRS. NASH speaks to herself again. This time, everyone hears her.
This has all happened before. Exactly like this. It’s just that none of you remember…
